When Phoenix Wren’s Coming-of-Age ceremony doesn’t go according to plan, leaving him without the Divine Apprenticeship that all his peers received, it sends him into a tailspin. He always wondered why– whether he had upset the Gods somehow, by being too lazy or because he rejected the feminine name and clothes he grew up with, or because he simply wasn’t good enough. He would give ANYTHING to get magic powers like everyone else– but he begins to rethink that when he gets the answer as to why it took so long, being ripped away from his life and his loved ones in the process.

Being the Apprentice to the Grim Reaper is the last thing he wanted, something he LOUDLY makes known to his boss. But with time, maybe he can learn to love his new job and use it for good rather than evil, and find a way back to his best friend, Ollie– and admit that he hopes they can be something more...

Chapter 1

The Coming-of-Age ceremony in the capital city is the biggest thing on every kid’s mind for months leading up to it. It’s hard for it not to be, since which divine Apprenticeship they walk away with that night defines what opportunities they’ll be offered for the rest of their lives.

Phoenix, Ollie, and Tali are all excited to learn what they’ll get, but terrified of the possibilities all the same. Will their families be happy for them? Will they always wish they’d gotten something else?

And what happens when it goes catastrophically wrong?
